National Stock Numbers are 13-digit numeric codes assigned to all items that are procured, stocked, and distributed by the federal supply chain. The 13-digit code can be split into various subcategories:
Federal Supply Classification Group (FSCG) - The first 4-digits of the NSN. This is split into the FSG and the FSC.
Federal Supply Group (FSG) - The first 2-digits of the NSN.
Federal Supply Classification (FSC) - The second 2-digits of the NSN
Federal Supply Group 38 consists of construction, mining, excavating, and highway maintenance equipment. This is further broken down into the following federal supply classes: 3805 earth moving and excavating equipment; 3810 cranes and crane-shovels; 3815 crane and crane shovel attachments; 3820 mining rock drilling, earth boring and related Equipment; 3825 road Clearing, cleaning, and marking equipment; 3830 truck and tractor attachments; 3835 petroleum production and distribution equipment; and 3895 miscellaneous construction equipment.
This federal supply group contains the heavy machinery used in large scale federal construction projects and mining. Equipment in this group can be extremely expensive due to the size and engineering behind such machinery. These items are not procured very often because they are long lasting. Some examples of equipment you will find in this group: backhouse, buckets, augers, sweepers, well heads, concrete mixers, cranes, etc. Some common manufactures include: Caterpillar Inc., Deere & Company, AB Volvo, KOMATSU LTD., and Kubota.
