At ASAP Semiconductor we have an extensive inventory of NSN parts. To standardize the process, U.S. Department of Defense constituted a system that distinctively and permanently recognizes the items that it buys.
National Stock Numbers are 13-digit numeric codes assigned to all items that are procured, stocked, and distributed by the federal supply chain. The 13-digit code can be split into various subcategories:
Federal Supply Classification Group (FSCG) - The first 4-digits of the NSN. This is split into the FSG and the FSC.
Federal Supply Group (FSG) - The first 2-digits of the NSN.
Federal Supply Classification (FSC) - The second 2-digits of the NSN
Federal Supply Group 47, Pipe, Tube and Rigid Tubing, is further subdivided into the following Federal Supply Classes: 4710 Pipe, Tube and Rigid Tubing; 4720 Hose and Flexible Tubing; and 4730 Hose, Pipe, Tube, Lubrication, and Railing Fittings.
This group does not contain air conditioning pipes, clay or concrete pipes, conduit pipes, or medical tubing. In this group you will mostly find pipes for carrying liquids in machinery and industrial applications. An interesting exception in this case would be fire extinguishing system piping which has its own class in Group 42. Included in Federal supply class 4730 is the elbow fittings and other lateral attachments to build a functioning system.
