In early December, Pratt & Whitney Canada announced that they would be upping the TBO, or Time Between Overhaul, and HSI, also known as Hot Section Inspection. This change means that PT6A-140, 140A and 140AG engines that are currently in service or that will be bought sometime in the future will not need to be inspected as often as they once did.
The time between overhauls got increased from 3,600 hours to every 4,000 hours. The hot section inspection was increased from 1,800 hours to 2,000 hours. This boost means more time in the air and less money spent on maintenance on these specific engines. The boost in performance is made possible by the PT6A engines themselves. They have proven year after year that they can handle whatever the market throws at them.
The engines have been around for more than fifty years and have gone through over seventy changes and seen the inside of roughly hundred and twenty-eight aircrafts. The newest addition to the PT6A family is the PT6A-140 collection. This engine series hit the market in 2012 and has really ramped up the competition among engine makers. When compared with similar models and price points, the PT6A-140 offers exceptional fuel efficiency and is a crowd favorite. Pratt & Whitney Canada have a collective airtime of 820 million hours, and that number only seems to be growing. They work with over two-hundred countries and have seen their products span the globe hundreds of thousands of times.
