Aircraft data plates are metal plates on aircraft that list crucial information about the aircraft such as date of manufacture, model number, serial number, registration number, and other general registration information. Typically found on the fuselage, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all aircraft to have a data plate - even aircraft built by amateurs. In fact, the FAA has a number of regulatory requirements for aircraft plates and identification tags. In addition to the previously listed information, the data plate must also denote information such as builder/manufacturer name & serial number, model designation, type certificate, and production certificate number. Furthermore, the plates must be in an area where they will not become defaced or illegible during normal flight conditions.
