Gregory Polek wrote an article for AIN Online talking about how GE Aviation has just recently completed its first round of ground testing for its GE9X development engine. This engine is considered to be the world’s largest commercial aircraft engine. When taking a look at the front fan, the engine has a diameter of 134 inches. On top of this, the turbofan can produce up to 100,000 pounds of thrust. The engine is planned to power the Boeing 777x which will be entering service in 2020.
In terms of the ground testing, the engine has completed over 160 hour, 200 cycles, and 85 starts since its inception. There will be a preliminary ice testing that will be done on the GE9X later in this year.
Here is what Ted Ingling, the GE9X program general manager has to say about the ground testing. “This engine is living up to our expectations, and we are extremely pleased with the results. During ground testing at GE Aviation’s Peebles Testing Operation, the first GE9X engine performed flawlessly, providing the engineering team with 1,200 individual data streams that reaffirmed the design.”
The GE9X includes features such as the composite fan case with 16 carbon fiber composite fan blades. There is also a pressure ratio of 27:1, 11 stage high pressure compressor, TAPS III combustor for low emissions and high efficiency, as well CMC material in the turbine and combustor.
